Original Freedom Writer to speak at program kickoff
In collaboration with the Corry Area School District, the Union City Family Support Center is launching and new Family Engagement Initiative called the Family Involvement Council. This will give parents, students and young adults a voice in the school district and allow parents to come together and engage other parents to get involved in their children’s education.
Another initiative being introduced on November 12, 2009 is Family Advocacy and Support Coordination that assists families, especially those living with special needs, in navigating the system. The kickoff is Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 6 pm at Corry High School. We are having a great international speaker and wanted to share his information for anyone interested in attending. Tony Becerra is one of the Original Freedom Writers from Long Beach, CA. He and his fellow students wrote a best-selling book called the Freedom Writers Diary, that was made into a major motion picture in 2007 called Freedom Writers. He will be in Corry next Thursday sharing his story of adversity and how one teacher built trust, hope and determination for him. His discussion is free and open to the public. Please forward this information to anyone you think would be interested in attending. Thank you.
